What is a Slot?

A narrow depression, groove, notch, or slit, especially one for receiving something, as a coin or a letter. Also: a period of time or position in a sequence or schedule: I’ve scheduled your haircut for 4 p.m., in slot 4.

Linguistics. a position having a particular grammatical function within a construction into which any one of a set of morphemes or morpheme sequences can fit: compare filler (def 9). The words in this article are all related to’slot’, with some being direct relatives and others being cognates.
